Do You Own Your Own Mind?

How much of what we think is an original expression and how much is just re-used from what we have picked up and copied from others? This is perhaps one of the most relevant questions that the new millennium poses as we move into a more centralised "singular" consciousness.

The boundaries between "I" and "someone else" are not that clear on a tangible level. Our self-consciousness is ever-shared with others on some level.

Thoughts and opinions are formed when we choose to accept or reject the train of thought another person is putting forward, to form an original thought or opinion is something that seldom happens, and even where it does the chances are that someone else has had that thought in the past even if we don't know about it.

The Unoriginal Expression

Consider language for example, the English language in particular. There is a level that we can relate on using specific words and expressions but most of those expressions are copied from others at one stage or another.

However what is the true nature of original expression? For something to be original it must belong to "ME" – that which makes YOU unique. But what is the nature of thinking in the modern age? How much of it is owned, a part of "me", and how much of it belongs to someone else?

Do You Own Your Own Mind?

It's about control

Much of 'Your Mind' is not "Yours" at all! You are not the thoughts that are occupied in the mind after all. Sometimes it is easier to label a person as a 'mean person' or 'depressed person' rather than considering that their mind is occupied with thoughts of anger or sadness. If we hold on to these thoughts then we become defined as an expression of them.

How much of our thinking process can we claim as our own? Most of the thoughts arrived in the mind through the process of us being exposed to the outer world and selecting which experiences are worthwhile forming an identification with.

In our world there is a constant battle to win over the minds of the most possible people. This is seen in corporations and religions as two examples. The more thoughts that someone can make us invest in 'being a Christian' or 'being a fan of' product X the more power those thoughts gain.

Hello to New Possibilities

Think about it. How much mental power do people invest in products? TV, cell phones etc. There is a battle for how much mental power we invest in these things, and an investment of mental power is an investment of consciousness.

Being original requires more than just investing mental power in things that the rest of the world is not consumed in. It requires being able to realize that these thoughts that the mind attaches to form a self-image, and that self-image is not the same as the true self. Your true self is genuine, where as the self-image that identifies with thinking patterns.

How much of our current thinking do we choose to own?

How much of it do we choose to let go?
