How can Spiritual Living be defined?

Anyone who has ever been challenged to strongly reconsider their entire opinion of the world knows that it can become extremely difficult to maintain a stable perspective when someone asks you to just throw all your standing beliefs out the window. Often when our life-perspective is challenged the previous values that have defined us must be replaced with something new—but with what? It never benefits us to hold on to an old part of ourselves longer than the time it takes us to learn the lessons we had to and to move forward with our lives.

If we are to take a mental list of all the things that we believe and then consider what it would be like if those things are untrue then what would happen? Could you challenge yourself in this way? Take an example of blogging. I used to think of blogging as a type of journaling exclusive to people who wrote about their personal experiences and nothing more. Later, when major magazines and newspapers started their own blogs I kind of had this idea of blogging as a method of freelance journalism. Beliefs move like water in a constant motion – ever changing and becoming truer as we gain more experience and information about the nature of our world. Upon questioning my beliefs a whole new range of possibilities opened up.

Beliefs by nature seemed to limit my life in a number of ways. In the process of questioning what real logical basis my beliefs held it become possible to carve away the delusions and misconceptions present in my mind.

Most solid ideas that exist in the outer world started off not being solid at all. One way to view our reality is as a set of possibilities. Those solid misconceptions around certain elements of existence are like brick walls to the mind. However if we remove the misconception in the mind then perhaps we can use the fluid possibilities to turn it into something positive.

So what is the point of defining spiritual living as something more special than just being open the ever-present possibilities of life? If our personal beliefs become more fluid rather than solid then we begin to see productiveness and truth in all living things. Beliefs cause pointless conflict – two rocks banging against each other, rather than two fluids merging into one whole and complete experience.

Fear

Spiritualism, meditation, etc. tend to provoke a lot of fear. If I ask you to let go of all you believe about the world I might come across as though I am threatening your entire existence, but the truth is that I am challenging the limiting net of beliefs that you have placed over your infinite and true self. To let go of all that takes a lot of courage because it allows your entire self to become free to expand in new areas and to breathe in the greater experience of life. The uncertain possibilities tend to be more threatening to us than the certain and comforting (however damaging) beliefs.

Discover the true potential beyond limiting beliefs by perceiving the potential of things as being fluid rather than solid, possibilities rather than constants.
