Positive affirmations

Creating and using positive affirmations has a lot more to it than simple repetition. The common misconception when using affirmations is that "the more I repeat this the more it will come true" — that's not quite the whole process.

Lift Off- Best Viewed Large

Good affirmations are based on pre-existing core-beliefs that serve our happiness … productiveness and well-being. For example consider these core-beliefs -

  1. I deserve to be here.
  2. I am capable and willing to be the best person I can be.
  3. I have the resources and potential to overcome all obstacles.

These core-beliefs differ from affirmations like -

  1. I feel deserving to be a part of …
  2. I am a better person
  3. I will overcome the following obstacle …

The difference between the former and the latter examples is that I hold the former beliefs, but I don't hold the latter ones! So what I'm doing when I create a mental affirmation of "I will overcome the obstacle …" is in fact more like:

Mental affirmation: I will overcome the obstacle …
Core Belief: I am stressed out. I can't do this. It's too hard to achieve.

Isn't that the reason such a great number of people use affirmations? To overcome existing obstacles? It's a mistake to see affirmations as a miracle cure or solution.

Instead look to locate the deeper negative belief that the affirmation is attempting to cover up. For instance for a person who is sick to keep affirming "I feel fine" without looking at the root causes of their sickness is more to do with covering up the problem than affirming a solution.

Solutions are difficult to affirm when we see them as miracles. Perceiving solutions as realistic outcomes and beliefs that we agree with is a far better approach. If I believe one of the personal qualities I have is resourcefulness and I create an affirmation of "I will achieve task abc" then I will have a greater likelihood of reaching that goal then holding the same affirmation alongside a negative belief that I am not motivated towards achieving that particular task at all.

Creating a positive affirmation for life

Good affirmations are those that are simple and natural to maintain and don't put a strain on us to remember them all the time. Good affirmations also stem from realization and beliefs about oneself.

So to structure a good affirmation first write it down.

  1. Then ask "do I believe this?"
  2. If the answer is Yes then determine what supporting facts exist for that belief.
  3. If the answer is No then evaluate what evidence there is against that belief.

Find an affirmation that results in a belief to back it up. If I believe something about who I am as a person and I affirm that – then it's going to have a real effect. But if I just affirm what I'd like to believe without looking at the negative beliefs that I have which are blocking the affirmation then I won't have much success with it.
