Too Much TalkIntention and self-will are at the center of human experience. Intention is often transferred into meaning through language. However the intention is often lost in the process. The state of mass confusion in existence that is ruled through the scope of words rather than true intentions leads to the essence of meaning being covered in a cloud of disillusion. Intention can be reconnected when we change our focus from words to other subtle methods of communication. Some examples are music, or art, or even silence. Silence often communicates more than words themselves! In this light it is possible to find new possibilities for self-expression that go past the boundaries pre-existing in the connotations of language. For example a kiss can be seen as a method of communication. The shades or levels within that method of communication can be even greater than a spoken conversation. Shifting our attention from word-based communication to a focus that is regardful of communication in all aspects of life brings a new flow into our own self-functioning. Deeper levels of communication go right to the meaning of something rather than attempting to formulate it. For some concepts formulation is essential. For example the spirit of Scientific Method deems definition as a prerequisite to all scientific enquiries. Yet people have found the greatest meaning of God -for example- in not providing God a definition but rather being in touch with the meaning of this word at a deeper level. The act of defining often enough captures and kills the transcendental essence and meaning of something true to us. Communication without definition often forms much more profound interpersonal connections. People sometimes strive to be scientific or objective but the truth of the matter is we are nowhere near that place where we can claim an objective frame of perception. I once wrote to someone: You have said to me that God does not exist but in this right youhave defined the subject God. You have brought God into our conversation and then claimed God does not exist right afterwards. Such a statement to me comes across as a self-denial of sorts or an almost paradox. However a person stating God as existing is not giving an air-tight definition as a pretext to their claim. Rather what the person is doing is providing reference to object of existence. I might agree with a person who references the non-existence of an object (God) if that object is an old man with a beard sitting on a bench plotting updates to the human genetic code. However the conception I have of the word God might have another reference. I think we all have our own point of reference to most words; but what is the point of discussing them if we are talking about different things? It is obvious that until a common point of reference is found conflict will be present. Often pointless conflict, I might add. Mis-communication is the cause of conflict and the cause of mis-communication is not listening. Placing an emphasis on being aware of possibilities of meaning rather than limiting our internal database of meanings opens us up to others and allows for productive connections to form and deeper level communication to flourish. |
