Turn Off Your TV for a MonthThe number of thoughts and mental images we process is tremendous. Most of those images are digital content — whether it be TV, computer screens or MP3 audio. Consider the amount of content that goes into our minds on a constant basis.
The magnitude of content is much larger than it was a few decades ago – and even larger than it was just last decade. Being flooded with content begins to saturate how we look at the world each time the mind receives a stream of images from the TV or the PC. That's when content feeds like Television begins having a negative effect. Our senses are acute when it comes to taking in visuals and sounds. One single frame in an image influences the mind more than a mental thought bubble for example. Looking at someone in person and looking at a person on TV are both visual methods content for the mind. Now when content begins to be exaggerated the subconscious mind does not distinguish between what's real and what's not all the time. Controversial television advertisingThis tends to be the case when the volume of images is too high. TV advertising is just "too much" and when we sit down to relax in the evening — stress, violence and raw images can sometimes be a little bit over the top. Controversial television advertising can trigger negative thoughts when we're attempting to relax. Consider I spent 30 minutes talking with a friend about 3-4 different topics. I might have a total number of 5-6 positive core-thoughts (or core images) during the conversation. If I later spend 20 minutes watching news where about 6 different stories with 3-4 negative consequences of each were presented = Total – 20 negative core-thoughts or thoughts. On the other hand time I spend watching ads might equal 8-9 advertisement breaks during which 6-8 ads were shown which promoted negative consequence-based thinking. Total = 60 negative core-thoughts and images. Keep in mind that the subconscious mind still reads images from the TV even if the sound is on mute… even while doing a different task altogether with the TV in peripheral view. This is a bit of a simplistic model – but consider the principle for a moment. How often does TV make us feel genuine happiness? How often does it cause us to do something productive and good for ourselves? Not often. Most advertising squanders the values that we hold closest to our hearts such as love, acceptence and trust. "Purchase This and This To Get Your Partner's approval and love" is one example of the values that television ads abuse. ExperimentI wouldn't stop watching TV altogether since this flood of content in the modern world cannot be avoided. There's just too much negative content promoted through digital media and devices. However switching off the TV for an entire month or even a week is a great exercise for self-awareness. It's quite difficult to do and it tells us a bit about just how addicted we might be. I feel more positive emotions when watching less TV. The reason I've come to learn is because I don't bombard the safe environment I'm in (home) with images of sadness, crisis and deprivation as much. I replace the negative influence of the TV with more positive influences. You Might Notice a Big ChangeI've avoided most TV for one month and one of the first things I soon noticed is how advertisements and certain TV shows look when watching them is no longer familiar or comfortable. Most of us are quite used to seeing ads and acknowledge "oh, it's just another ad" but what happens when we don't look at these ads for a month? The comfort potion wears off and we see them for their true nature — in perspective most of them are junk for the mind. But what happens when we watch the same programming all the time? The mind becomes accustomed and dulled to the content and fails to recognize the negative content. Just avoided a certain 'stream' of content results in the comfort factor being broken and when this happens the mind becomes clear and sharp again and it's much easier to perceive the hidden messages present there. Overall benefits
Forming an addiction has a negative effect on our health and the unfortunate truth is that watching TV makes people prone to forming an addiction around it. Habits can become addictions when we no longer do tasks because we want to — but when we begin doing them because we are used-to doing them. Like TV, this is true for all of life. |
