21 Things to Learn From Steve PavlinaI have been following Steve Pavlina's blog since 2006 and a lot of his articles have been helpful for me. His direct approach to personal development makes it simple to get a lot out of reading his blog. Here are 20 basic values Steve has re-enforced for me in terms of the ideas and beliefs I hold at the present moment. I have summarized each of the insights and linked to the articles that those originate from. Since so much of this blog is related to self development and consciousness a number of these will be good readings for those who have not come across Steve's blog before. Steve Pavlina has been known to be one of the most self-motivated individuals to run a personal blog and he often has great insights into personal motivation and goal setting. This particular article offers a great reminder to approach goals that are more reachable and easier to achieve to fuel our motivation towards greater goals rather than tackling our biggest goals first before building up the motivation. The reason most people avoid work is because there is no purpose or personal pleasure derived from the particular work involved, Steve suggests. It is a worthwhile investment to seek a job that provides a sense of purpose in alignment with our personal goals. 3. Create a Quota to Reach Goals Setting quotas is one of the best methods to achieve a particular goal. This article describes the benefits of setting quotas to split difficult tasks into achievable fragments. Two examples given are: Spending four hours writing each morning to achieve a total of 20 hours (or 28 if counting weekends) at the end of each week. Deleting 10 spam e-mails each evening to delete a total of 70 per week. I know this works for a fact since I let the junk mail pile up a few months ago until it reached about 2000 e-mails. So I decided to delete 200 each night before going to sleep and after less than two weeks I got rid of the junk and sifted through the messages intended for the Inbox that landed there instead. This is a great reminder to Trust Yourself rather than believing in expert opinions and statistics. Most experts and authorities are quick to find something wrong with their patients or clients to diagnose them and treat them. This is a great reminder to listen to Your Intuition first. 5. Get Involved Anyway, Even if You Think It Won't Help Get involved with organisations and associations that share similar interests and opportunities arise when least expected. The advice in this article has been especially true in my experience. Meeting new people changes the dynamics of any problems we might be facing in our lives, and in fact changes the entire perspective we have on our lives and the world at large. 7. Create Your Own Inspiration Decide on a particular intention before expecting creative energies to get flowing. Do not take the limitations others infer as instructions about how to live. This article asks the question "Why Can't Psychics Guess Your Name?" and answers it too: "If you can really taste, then tell me what I ate for breakfast this morning." This reminded me of the first time I realised that the proof demanded for senses beyond the physical was more than the proof that was demanded from the power of our physical senses. Hard scepticism is often misplaced. If we are going to live our lives based on certain beliefs, then we might as well choose some good ones. This article presents 8 traits of productive beliefs. 11. Learn How to Do It Yourself The last post I wrote "Learn 6 New Things Right Now" was geared towards the importance of learning and keeping the mind active. In this article a similar attitude is presented, along with 10 reasons for acquiring more technical skills rather than hiring someone to take care of those tasks. 12. Reduce Time Spent Using the TV 8 Points on the benefits of giving up TV. Here is an excerpt of one of the most interesting points:
13. Be Conscious Explore the nature of ego vs. awareness and continue to explore it on a practical basis rather than establishing and following a belief about it. 15. Focus on Building Soulful Relationships This is an eye-opening article that describes some of the mindsets people use to pre-define their relationships. It later goes on to describe some of the more positive mindsets that can be exercised to empower future relationships. Don't reject people because of their social roles (i.e. salespeople). Excellent article. How does a person define a "conscious" idea? Steve describes this as an idea that can be implemented and made effective – rather than remaining a dream in the mind. If our ideas remain in the mind then how can we ever know how good their true form is? Having an "implementation-driven" mindset helps to make ideas conscious rather than potential happenings. 18. Turn Fears into Opportunities Fear often provides powerful opportunities for growth and personal development. 19. Take Risks
20. Focus on Your Own Strengths This is an article titled "How to Beat the Competition" but what it discusses is developing the unique strengths and offerings each one of us has and not caring about the competition. The truth is that there is no competition – the full personal development of one person should cause others to shine brighter too, not be diminished in the shadow of the perceived leader. 21. ?
