Proof of Something Greater and an Inner PurposeSometimes I think – what's the point? Dedicating so much time to studies based in philosophical theories, countless months spent in meditation, or perhaps dedicating an entire lifetime to following one religion or path… what causes people to do this? It almost suggests that someone can get closer to experiencing God or proving that something greater is 'out there' with enough time spent focusing on a specific religion or path. The Problem of Seeking Something and Thinking it Does not Exist at The Same Time I am not as surprised hearing statements like "God does not exist" or "there is nothing greater to strive for in this world" as I am surprised at how often people use these statements as a justification for their lack of initiative and motivation. Rather than provide a proof, the beliefs that we hold instead seem to reinforce the level of comfort that a person is living at. If we let go of the fixed idea about life and the limitations that exist here and that leaves a lot of uncertain feelings about what else there is that we have been missing. Can a Higher Power Invalidate Your Current Life? The modern role of religion and faith seems to separate people in the world from their soul or their higher calling. Those ideas are often based on escaping or invalidating their lives in place of a higher state of being. For example if God exists, then people become responsible for their sins. On the other hand an atheist could state that people are not responsible for their sins because God does not exist. The point I am attempting to make is that it is common for us to shift perspective to fit an idea of something greater rather than to become aware of what that is. If we can choose our responsibilities and how we want to live then that means that no of higher power wants to stop us from doing so — rather we make assumptions and choose a lens of perspective to place judgement on ourselves and others for their lives not in accordance with this 'belief'. So often the discussion of something greater or the existence of God is not one of proof at all. Instead it is often a question of how that higher power can seem to threaten our existing perspective and worldview. On the surface this makes it seem easier to hide behind religions and beliefs to validate an existing lifestyle. Consciousness Instead of PerspectiveInstead of shaping our perspective of religion and the limitations of our world to fit the current comfortable state of being that we are in it can be beneficial to ask questions such as: Is this the real issue or is this an issue of perspective? Consult YourselfConsider the issues that cause the most debate in our world. For example, issues of ethical responsibilities often cause a division in religious and personal perspectives. Instead of asking "which perspective will work best for me?" ask "is this an issue of perspective or is this a real issue?" To choose a perspective blocks out the true situation under the veil of free will. If the issue has a real basis then what is the point of choosing differing perspectives about it? On the other hand if the issue has no real basis then what is the point of holding a belief or perspective about it in the first place? Getting to the main issue with consciousness is a much more effective method of establishing the real issue. Instead of asking "what opinion will I hold on…" ask "what meaning does this have for me and what meaning that this have for others?" Considering The Existence of God
Consider The Real Issues
Each perspective holds behind it a deeper issue. If we can get to the bottom of these issues then sometimes it becomes clear that we feel we need something greater to be able to feel justified in either not living a full life, or feeling like there is permission we need to seek to be able to live a full life. Before forming a perspective consider what real issue that perspective is shaping rather than facing up to first. |
